Andrea and I have been working hard to bring you this new book, designed to help you create your own pair of quilted sneakers.
While I spend much of my time helping shoe brands develop footwear in large overseas factories, I especially enjoy working with home shoemakers. That’s what inspired this project.
Over the past year, Andrea and I have collaborated with quilters, sewists, and other creative makers as they explored shoemaking, gathered ideas, and shared valuable tips along the way.
We know making shoes can sound a little intimidating at first. It can seem like something that only happens in factories or requires a lot of special knowledge. But one of the things we discovered while working on this book is that home makers are incredibly capable, creative, and resourceful. With the right guidance, the process becomes not only possible, but genuinely enjoyable.
That’s what we hoped to do with How to Make Quilted Sneakers—make shoemaking feel welcoming and within reach. We walk you through the process step by step, from materials and tools to construction and finishing details, so you can build confidence as you go. Our goal was to take techniques that might seem unfamiliar and explain them in a way that feels clear, practical, and inspiring.
In How to Make Quilted Sneakers, we show you how to combine your sewing skills with basic shoemaking techniques. We outline the tools, materials, and methods you’ll need to make shoes at home, and we’ve adapted certain factory materials and processes to make them practical for home shoemakers.
Our goal is to help you create shoes that are both fun and functional.
This book really grew out of our love of making things by hand and our belief that creative skills can take you further than you might think. If you already sew, quilt, or love working with fabric, you may have everything you need to start exploring shoemaking too.
What makes this book especially meaningful to us is the community that helped shape it. So many quilters, sewists, and makers shared their ideas, questions, and enthusiasm along the way. Their creativity reminded us that making is always about more than the finished project. It’s about learning, experimenting, and finding joy in the process.
We hope this book encourages you to try something new, trust your skills, and enjoy making something you can truly wear and call your own.
